The Ministry of Health and Wellness is reporting that there are no confirmed cases of hantavirus disease in Dominica; however, the ministry is closely monitoring the situation.

Local risk assessments conducted through the national surveillance system indicate that the current public health risk remains low.

Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Andy St. Hilaire emphasises the need for heightened vigilance, particularly after periods of heavy rainfall, flooding, and poor environmental sanitation.

Meantime, St. Hilaire encourages the public to remain alert and seek medical attention promptly if any symptoms arise.

Health officials are currently monitoring an outbreak of hantavirus linked to a cruise ship.

As of today, May 11, 2026, there are 9 reported cases and 3 deaths linked to the current hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius.
